Counselling for Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar Disorder is an illness of the brain as much as one of the mind. Too much therapy for bipolar disorder focuses on struggling with and ultimately losing the battle with our moods.
Instead, we will blend two treatment modalities that help mitigate the symptoms of bipolar disorder and to live a fulfilling life while living with the condition:
Social Rhythm Therapy (SRT) helps us to structure our lives in terms of sleep, work, and relationships, creating the routines that help mitigate the effects of bipolar disorder.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) helps us develop what is called the “observing self”, helping us to step outside of our mood episodes in order to make them more manageable.
Ultimately, SRT and ACT help our moods to improve, but not by battling against them. Instead, we learn to manage our mental rhythms, and de-fuse from our mood episodes.
Daniel Bader, Ph.D., RSW, CCC, not only treats bipolar disorder, but also brings 20 years of peer expertise to the treatment of bipolar disorder, having been himself diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 1997. He runs the popular blog, Bipolar Village, on the subject. He is a Registered Social Worker and a Canadian Certified Counsellor, so his services are covered by most benefit plans.
