Counselling for Anxiety and Depression
Our thoughts and our moods reinforce each other. Distressing thoughts generate anxiety and depression, while anxiety and depression generate distressing thoughts.
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) helps clients to interrupt this cycle, as they learn to develop balanced thoughts and reduce anxiety and depressing.
This isn’t simply bootstrapping, replacing sad thoughts with happy thoughts. Lying to ourselves simply doesn’t work. Rather, you will learn to marshall evidence to create “balanced” thoughts that includes the truth in your distressing thoughts, but weighs evidence against them.
At first, this will help with individual episodes of anxiety or depression. As you learn to manage episodes, you will recognize patterns, called “core beliefs”, that are generating the anxiety or depression in the first place. By challenging those, not only will anxiety or depression be reduced, but you can learn to live an overall more fulfilling life.
Daniel Bader, Ph.D., RSW, CCC, has studied CBT at a masters degree level, and uses this modality successfully with clients living with difficulties including anxiety, depression, anger, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. He is a Registered Social Worker and a Canadian Certified Counsellor, so his services are covered by most benefit plans.
